Cardinal’s Drop One but Bounce Back to Win Second Against Orioles

August 8, 2005 - The Johnson City Cardinals took one of two from the Bluefield Orioles Saturday night. The Cardinals lost the first game 6 – 0, but bounced back to win the second 8 -1.

In the first game of the evening the Cardinals were held to only two hits by Bluefield’s Kyle Schmidt and Ryan Stadanlick. Bryan Anderson doubled in the bottom of the fifth and Jose Martinez singled in the bottom of the seventh, but both men were left stranded as the Cardinals went on to lose 6-0.

Schmidt got the win for the Orioles while Matthew Lane got the loss for Johnson City. The Cardinal’s pitching staff gave up six runs off nine hits. Kieron Pope led the way for the Orioles going 3 - 4 with a homerun, double, and single.

The Cardinals won game two with a score of 8-1. Colby Rasmus led the way going 3 – 3 with a homerun and two doubles, while Bryan Anderson also added a double and two RBI’s to help the Red Birds to victory.

Matt Weagle and Ryan Campbell combined to strike out fifteen of the Orioles’
batters and only gave up one run. Weagle got the win and Chorye Spoone got the loss after giving up four runs in 2.2 innings of work.

Cardinals Drop to Orioles, 12-2

August 7, 2005 - Johnson City (20-25) fell to the Bluefield Orioles (19-24) on Sunday night, losing 12-2 at Howard Johnson Field. As the rain came down, the Cardinals pitching staff was unable to control the Orioles bats, giving up fifteen hits and twelve runs. Tyler Herron got the loss for the Cardinals, after pitching 3.2 innings and giving up five runs, while Julio Soriano posted a victory for the Orioles and improved his record to 2-4.

The Cardinal’s took an early 1-0 lead, in the bottom of the first, when Adam Morris scored on an RBI double by Charles Carter. But by the second inning the Orioles bats came alive. Bluefield scored twelve runs before Johnson City could post its second and only other run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Angel Avila went 2-4 with a homerun and double, while his teammates Brandon Snyder and Stuart Musslewhite also added homeruns for the Orioles. Charles Carter went 2-2 for the Cardinals with a double and a RBI.

Cardinals Fall in Late Innings to Orioles, 6-3

August 8, 2005 - The Johnson City Cardinals (20-26) gave up a three run homerun in the top of the eighth inning to lose to the Bluefield Orioles (20-24), 6-3.

The Cardinals once again took an early 2-0 lead when Daryl Jones and Charles Carter scored as Jon Mikrut reached on a throwing error by Orioles third baseman Denver Kitch. Johnson City was unable to hold onto the lead very long as starting pitcher Josh Wilson gave up three runs in the top of the third.

Donovan Solano tied the game in the bottom fourth after reaching base on a single to center. Malcolm Owens moved Solano over to third as he reached base on a throwing error by Wilfrido Perez. He then scored on a wild pitch by Perez. Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the eighth when Kevin Fitzgerald gave up a three run homerun to Orioles first baseman Paul Chimel.

Alberto Bastardo got the win for Bluefield pitching one complete inning and giving up no runs. Kevin Fitzgerald was awarded his first loss of the season.

The Cardinals are scheduled to return to Howard Johnson Field on Tuesday, August 9th to start a three game series against the Bristol White Sox. All games are scheduled to begin at 7 pm.
